Asisat Oshoala’s parents were reluctant to allow her to play football, believing it would distract her from her studies and that the sport was a dead end — for girls. Today, Asisat Oshoala is a record-breaking international superstar, and she’s using her platform to make sure the next generation of girls doesn’t have to fight as hard as she did. Through the Asisat Oshoala Academy, she’s giving girls across Nigeria access to education and sport, and sending them a message she wished she’d heard earlier: don’t give up on your dreams because of society or the people around you.
“I tell them my own story, and when they see that there’s someone who has actually got something out of this process, they might go on the same path as well,” she says. That’s what playing on looks like.
